Ootp: what a joke

I saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix last night with
_snitchbitch and a few others from the club. In case I've not yet made it clear I am NOT a fan of the movies. I cannot watch the first two without shouting angrily at it until whoever I'm with makes me leave the room. I really like the third, and the fourth was quite good. Not at all good enough to compare to the books, but they were both enjoyable for everyone, including those who hadn't read the books.
This one? BLOODY AWFUL! It was shot well, I'll give it that. It was also cast well, not that most of the superb actors were even on screen much. I'm just so disappointed, I had high hope and they've been dashed. DASHED I TELL YOU!
Whoever was involved in the editing process of this film needs to be shot. Likewise with the screenwriter. I just can't comprehend how they thought it would be a good idea to miss out CRUCIAL parts of the book. And then include pointless nonsense which was not at all crucial to the overall story. No mention of Regulus Black, too bad if he does play as big a part in the final book as everyone is expecting. We spent about three minutes in 12 Grimmuld Place when so much important stuff happened there. No mention of how Petunia knows a lot more about the magical world than we all thought, plus she didn't get that howler which I just know is going to very significant in The Deathly Hallows. Mrs Figg didn't sit well with me, that scene in the book where she tells Harry she's a squib and then beats Mundungus with her string bag was excellent, but it was short and impersonal in the film. Dumbledore was grumpy again, which made no sense AGAIN. The barely touched on Neville's parents, something that was very important and will probably be very important in the final book. The whole attack of Mr Weasley thing was glossed over, which should have been quite a prominent scene. Trelawney being fired was far too understated, when it should have been a fairly traumatic scene. Hagrid wasn't even fired, nor was McGonagall stunned into oblivion. GRAWP WAS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY! Cho pissed me off even more than what she did in the books, which is saying a lot! No Quiddich therefore no "Weasley is our King" which was where Ron got some of the respect he deserved. In fact, why wasn't he a prefect, it would have been an extra two lines of dialogue for gods sake! And it would have given the poor guy some of the lime light for once. The Death Eaters were piss weak, whooshing about like sand and not even hurting the children? BORING! And Sirius' death was a laugh, I didn't feel one shred of sadness, in fact it was kind of puncy. He might have as well done the overacted death stagger you see in old films, then fallen into the doorway like a trough of water. Then at least it could have been funny instead of just plain stupid.
There was SO much more that annoyed me, but I'll wait til I see it again in order to remember. After the 2nd viewing I really don't think I'll bother seeing it again.
Now there were a few good things, though they were few and far between. Umbridge was excellent, though not quite hideous enough, but that's fair enough, no one could look as foul as she does in the books. I personally loved her office and some of her clothes, SO CUTE AND PINK! But that's just me being weird about pink. She did a good job, I shook my fist at her a few times with her little "hem hem"s. Luna was quite good, I'm glad they included the bit at the end about her having her stuff nicked, it was really sweet and spot on. She was played exactly as she should have been, thank god. The thestrals were awesome, exactly as I imagined them (and omg baby one ^_^). Snape was great, the occlumency lessons were like they should have been and they showed enough of his awful childhood to evoke just enough sympathy (though without Harry speaking to Sirius and Lupin about it later, it was kind of pointless). Despite her lack of screen time, Bellatrix was so good I could have peed myself. But that's all to do with Helena Bonham Carter being awesomely crazy, really.
The one scene which made it all worthwhile was where Voldemort battled Dumbledore. It was way too short, but my god it was good. That's exactly how they would battle, no silly hexes or smashing everything in sight, just a battle of will and strength. I also liked how Harry was possessed by Voldemort, it was quite a touching moment when Harry stood up to him and expelled him from his body. Plus it was kind of gross/scary, which the film had generally lacked.
God forbid if you were one of the people who hadn't read the book, I can't imagine how they would have followed it at all!
Meanwhile I'm so scared about the final book coming out on the 21st. It's got a lot to live up to, so much so I'm almost too scared to read it in case it all goes wrong. How the fuck is she going to tie up all of the loose ends? This book is going to be the size of the Encyclopedia Brittanica to please everyone!

Date: 13/7/07 09:28 (UTC)By the way, I disliked the book first time round, but I'm re-reading it again (for about the third or forth time) and am LOVING it. I don't know why, but it's just really enjoyable this time.
