The fun thing about zombies is that ANYONE or ANYTHING can be a zombie. I went as a Steampunk zombie last year, a ballerina the year before and a flapper the year before that. My favourite one was nerd zombie where I had a calculator embedded in my head (we carefully cut a scientific calculator in half and attached it to a headband with wire and covered the headband with thick blood and gore.
Makeup is crazy easy, the fake blood I like the most is the chocolate one here: http://www.shades-of-night.com/larp/blood.html as it's easy, edible, cheap, and realistic! Oh and it doesn;t stain (in my experience). Give it a practice go and use corn flower to thicken it up a bit for gorier effects. It doesn't keep long so make it a couple of days beforehand and refrigerate it before use. Build up the thicker stuff to make wounds with runnier stuff oozing out to make it fresh and extra gross.
I've just started using liquid latex for wounds which also takes a bit of practice but there are so many cool tutorials on youtube and it's not that hard at all, really.
Let me know if you need any other ideas, as I have tonnes :D
