Films, Films, Films!
Tuesday, 13 November 2007 21:05If you knew me at all you know I love films. Love 'em all. I want to work in the film industry eventually, I even studied it at Uni. So naturally I've seen a few movies lately and since I seem to never post about the films I've seen any more, I thought I'd give a brief run down of what I have seen lately. Just some opinions on the films, nothing much. And I've given nothing away!
OK so I know I've seen more films lately, many more actually, but I'm feeling like shit and can't think through the pains in the tonsil/jaw/ear region. Whinger? YOU BETCHA!
- Stardust Actually I saw it ages ago but as I enjoyed it so thoroughly I thought it deserved a mention. I haven't read the book, which is not normally something I do but I'm lazy and saw the film on a random whim with mum. I've always loved fantasy movies but since the cinema's have been inundated with many lackluster ones lately, this one was a pleasant surprise. I like films that don't take themselves too seriously and have hilarious cameo's. One quote by Ricky Gervais' character still cracks me up (it involved someone's face being as ugly as a sack of frogs).
- Death Proof I was so disappointed this wasn't released as a double feature with Grindhouse BUT none-the-less it was fucking awesome. I've always liked Quentin Tarantino's films, though I have never understood why they all have such fucked up timelines, jumping all over the place and confusing the hell out of almost everyone. This one had a straight timeline and while it was mostly conversations between the characters, the action scenes were just BAM in your face like a tonne of bricks. I went with mum, who said it was one of the best films she's seen in a long time, and since she thinks Tarantino films are mostly crap, this was a very big thing. Superb acting and music, as always!
- 30 Days of Night I had such high expectations of this film so was delighted when I got free passes to see an advanced screening. I was disappointed. I dislike Josh Hartnet thoroughly and once again his bad acting ruined the movie for me. Oh and Melissa George either has bucked teeth or someone fucked up her cosmetic dentistry. Her mouth was so distracting and made me quite angry. The film wasn't even that scary and the gore wasn't even that "gross". And the ending? Just stupid, thank you very much. I wish I'd been high like my mates who I saw it with because then maybe I might have enjoyed it a lot more (like they did).
- The Host Saw this on DVD, as Anthony and I have been on a renting frenzy lately (I hate renting movies but it's really bloody convenient when you want to see a new film at 8pm on a weeknight and JB HiFi is closed). This is Korean horror film, I guess you'd say. I love (most) Korean films, especially since the London-Korean film festival last year. They either do filmss really well or really badly, but this one was good. Essentially after chemicals are dumped in the main river that goes through Seoul, a monster is "born" and attacks and kills many people along the river bank one day. That scene is spectacular, not reall gory and you don't see people die really, but it was just so well shot. The plot gets a lot more complicated from this point but it's very well done, with moments of terror, sadness and some hilarity. I'd definitely recommend it to everyone.
